Does anyone know if possible to make a wireless connection for/using only one computer?

I have Internet wired connection through Mediacom. However, I would like to make this wireless. I own a Netgear RangeMax 10x that I used when I roommated a long time ago, connect with my roommate's Internet so I can have wireless Internet in my room. btw...This was not stealing because her Internet provider said it was okay as long as we were not online at the same time. She rarely went online and it was in the evenings when I wasn't home.

I can get a strong wireless signal but no Internet connection through the Netgear. I have never tried connecting the Netgear for wireless by using only my one computer. Therefore, I'm not sure if this is possible. I would like to keep the modem and Netgear on one side of the room, so I can move the computer and monitor to the other side of the room.

What is the brand and model of your modem?

Did you reset the router to factory defaults before doing any configuration for your current use?

Did you remember to power cycle the modem when switching from computer to router? And did you double check that you connected the modem to the router's WAN port?
