    Hi all,
While browsing the web a warning popped up saying that i had a virus. The warning looked like a genuine windows tab that had opened, but something was different about it. Something started downloading and I was left with just my desktop background.
No icons were there, nor was the start tab. Control-alt-delete doesn't work. I can shut the laptop off using the power button and log on to other accounts, but they have the same problem. I have looked around online and there is a whole range of solutions to this problem that vary greatly. I would appreciate a solution that allowed me to keep my files. I should mention that stupidly, i did not renew my virus protection (Mcafee) and so all I had was windows firewall.

I have looked this up extensively, including on this forum, but have yet to see a satisfactory solution.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Of course, I will be happy to supply any additional information that you need to solve this.
    Thanks in advance.

Are you able to boot to Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking?

    Apologies for my late reply.
No, i have tried both. When i boot safe mode, and log onto my account, I just get a white screen that says "please wait while the connection is being established" and the same underneath in German, if that's relevant.
If it's any help, I am able to move the mouse around.

In safe mode with networking i entered my account password and that was it - computer frozen on the login screen. No white screen this time.
When i start in safe mode with command prompt, i get a black background and a black window that I can type in (command prompt i'm guessing). This is replaced within seconds by that white screen with the message.

Are you able to call up the Task Manager by doing Ctrl-Alt-Del?

Try burning the Kaspersky Rescue CD and booting the system from it which will access the files using a linux-based system then use the WindowsUnlocker as described in the following instructions. Please be careful to follow the instructions carefully.

    http://support.kaspersky.com/8005

Let me know if you can boot to Windows normally after doing the above.

Just did that, apart from the part at the end with the report (step 5 on the website)
There were 4 trojans which i deleted. Their status was confirmed as deleted in the kapersky tab.
However the computer freezes when try to log on. As in - i type my password, click enter, and wait forever for the desktop which never comes.

I have tried different combinations of booting the hard drive first, the cd drive first, etc, but nothing seems to be working.
    Any more ideas?

You still can't boot to safe mode either?

Are you still getting the white screen?

What was I thinking for not trying that?!
Yes, safe mode appears to be working now. The background is black and there are no icons (not sure if this is normal) but i can access everything through the start bar.
At least we are getting somewhere....
Thanks so far, but where from here?

Please go here and download the TDSSKiller.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click to TDSSKiller.exe on your desktop to run it.
    • Click on Start Scan
    • As we don't want to fix anything yet, if any malicious objects are detected, do NOT select Cure but select Skip instead.
It will produce a log once it finishes in the root drive which should look like this example:

    C:\TDSSKiller.<version_date_time>log.txt

Please copy and paste the contents of that log in your next reply.

That's fine. You can transfer the program over via a USB flash drive.

    Apologies for the late reply.
I have just tried that, and was able to run the scan. It found 1 problem.
However, i used a re-writable cd to get the program onto my computer, as it does not respond to me putting a usb stick in. I have tried each usb port, and the usb mouse works in each. My cd rom drive is read-only, so i cant use it as a two-way system.

Is there a way around this? Or are there any more important parts of the report that you would like me to type out for you?
