I currently have XP Home Edition. If I upgrade to Professional, will it just install the extra features, or will it cause problems with any of the files and programs I already have?

This upgrade, unlike one from the 9x family, should be relativeley easy. And all your files and programs should be saved. There are never guarantees, so save what you can. But upgrades try to save everything.

I agree with Elvandil - save everything first. Most importantly the registry.

I did the exact same upgrade, but I started with Windows ME.

ME > Windows XP Home Edition > Windows XP Pro (over the course of about a year).

I don't know if I held my mouth right or what, but every upgrade went without a hitch and I kept everything (I just backed up to make sure.)
