windows xp professional

    hi im using windows xp professional on my desktop pc when i startup windows screen loads fine the problem im having is it takes about 3 minutes for desktop icons to appear ive scanned for malware with emsisoft anti malware also tried malwarebytes anti-malware pro. spware blaster.im using avg anti-virus 2011 paid version i know my way round a pc but this has got me baffled can anyone help thanks

    Personally I believe AVG to be the problem while it stalls awaiting the network to be live so it can update. It's also worth going from Start to Run, type msconfig, hit Enter then check under the StartUp tab for things that don't need to be started automatically at boottime.

    anything plugged into the PC - take those all off
    have a look at the startup list
    Start>
    Run>
    msconfig
    startup Tab

    compare those items that are ticked
    with this data base and untick any not needed

    hi i typed run msconfig startup there is 15 programs running at startup not sure what ones to untick

    Etaf pointed you to a list. For my part, I'd prevent all but the firewall and AV. :D
