When I unplug the mouse and start the computer it comes up to the select user screen. Without the mouse I can't select a user and continue. I can't bring up the START menu usintg Ctrl/Esc with the select user screen up. How can I get past the user screen and bring up the start menu?

Interesting question. Why do you want to use Windows without a pointer device?

To select the user click the Tab key until a user is selected and then use an arrow key to select the user you want. Once XP is open Ctrl+Esc keys or the Window key (the key with the Microsoft flag) if your keyboard one, can be used.

Thanks for the info. The reason for the question is I was trying to install a cordless optical mouse and wound up at the user screen and couldn't get to the START.

You can logon using Ctrl+Alt+Del. But you should have been able to install the new mouse drivers first then power down and then change the mouse. Windows should recognize the change and setup the new mouse automatically. Let us know how you made out and what it took.
