    Hey, it's me again.

I know that there are already many threads similar to this one, but I've tried a couple of the possible solutions, but none of them worked. So I am here, begging you to help me out. So...

I've recently installed a windows update (automatic updates) and then rebooted. My desktop was gone along with the toolbar and icons. I can run task manager and my desktop background image displays. I can run everything normally it's just that I can't get the desktop to show up. 'explorer.exe' is running, but I can tell that many processes that'd usually start with Windows (listed under "Username" or "Aleksander" in my case) don't start. Only explorer.exe starts under my "username".

MAJOR NOTE!!: I've had a virus about a month or maybe two months ago and have solved it (http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/976289-wgd-exe-virus-i-cant.html). I've done a ComboFix clean and re-installed Service Pack 3. Then I also installed VistaMizer (changes the outlook of XP to make it look more like Vista).

Everything has been working fine until the last automatic update. I've had the computer running for 3 days straight and today, when my friend wanted to access web through the router (wireless) on his laptop he couldn't. It connected, but it said that there's no internet connection. After the reboot (which included the update) I found myself with no desktop and on my friend's laptop it said that it couldn't connect because there is an IP collision. It says there are 2 same IPs or smh like that and that it can't connect. Now I haven't changed any IP in the last month and I've got static IPs on both, my PC and my bud's laptop. I suspect that a virus of some kind has changed the IP. -BTW, laptop has Win7 installed.- I still haven't looked into the ipconfig or my router's settings.

Now here is the HJT log:

If you'll need another log from GMER or the DSS log from sUBs, please tell me to do so.

Now I beg you, please help me find a solution and I'll be thankful for life. Even if it means clean install of XP, just as long as it works (although I really wouldn't like to reinstall WinXP or format my HDD - it'd be my first attempt at formatting a HDD... At least I haven't ever partitioned a HDD or formatted it, so please give step by step instructions if I'll have to do so)

    Regards,
    YerOldPoison A.K.A. Aleksander

PS: I still haven't tried the system restore point BTW. And if there will be any registry entries that I'll have to check or add, or just simply restore the system's state before the update, then PLEASE be patient with me and instruct me step by step on how to do so. I am not that experienced...
AND if I've started the thread in the wrong section of the forum, I sincerely apologize and ask the admin to move it to the appropriate section.

I don't know what you use that computer for and what peripherals you have connected to it, but it has way too many programs and services auto-loading and running in the background. (n)

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

If you've never done it or haven't done it in awhile, delete the contents of these temp folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp

    C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Download and install

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.50.1.1100

    SUPERAntiSpyware 4.48.0.1000

then update their definition files, then run a quick scan, then select and remove everything they find.

Now I've (force) rebooted (after starting "desktop" and an alt+f4 session) and desktop appeared (tho partially... VistaMizer functions aren't all displayed). Right now I am deleting the Temp files and
    "etilqs_yEAEjvEfkpGdlbDccEEZ" under "C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp"
and "Perflib_Perfdata_8fc.dat", "Perflib_Perfdata_21c.dat", "Perflib_Perfdata_410.dat", "Perflib_Perfdata_684.dat" under "C:\WINDOWS\Temp" can't be deleted, because they're being used by some program. Which program that is? Chrome maybe?

It's normal for a few files to resist deletion, so leave them alone and delete everything else.

After you're done, empty the Recycle Bin and then restart the computer.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Once you get MBAM and SAS installed and updated, don't use your computer during the scanning progress.

Make sure to run a quick scan and not a full/complete scan because it'll take much longer and usually isn't needed.

What's that ntune/ntuneservice.exe.... seems legit, but is it a knockoff from Itunes????

nah the nTune service is like some kind of control center for Nvidia Graphics cards. I am running a fan @ customized RPMs and that's why it always starts at the startup.

Now... My problem is partially fixed. The connection interruption message is gone and wireless and wired access points are up and running. The only problem left is that I haven't got a full Win toolbar. Some of the components are missing; such as left side (by the start button) icons that were once there are missing and the "splitter" (a short line) that splits the tasks shown running in the right and the whole other side of the toolbar on the left is missing; the toolbar doesn't go down automatically nor forced... And my start menu (started by clicking on start/Win button) is changed to basic 98 look, instead of the modified VistaMizer outlay. Everything else seems fine. I'll check for viruses w/ my AV (ESET NOD32 4.0) and then run ComboFix to clean it up just in case. And maybe even reapply the XP's SP3.

Thanks for the replies. Tho any more opinions and tips would be warmly welcome.

    Regards,
    YerOldPoison :)
