I seem to have fouled up my machine with a Trojan. My licesenced Mcafee didn't spot it and I have tried I dunno how many freeware antispy-programs to no avail - it's still there. To make matters worse, one of these freeware programs seems to have had a malfunctioning installer - when I tried installing it, everything stalled. Upon rebooting, I found that the machine would not startup properly. It got me to Desktop but then completely stalled, and thus it has been since. Since then, I can only run the machine in safe mode.

If anyone could assist me with this, I'd truly appreciate it - I have a deadline to meet and no tech support to turn to. :(

Hi there!

I was recently infected by a Trojan (see help wanted thread in that forum) and when I was trying to remedy it myself, I downloaded all sorts of antivirus programs wherever I could find them. One of them didn't install properly and the entire machine stalled, so I did a hard reboot. Unfortunately, now I can only run the machine in safe mode. In normal mode, Windows loads to desktop, but then invariably stalls. I'm suspecting that this is not related to the virus, but to that failed install and now I would really appreciate some help on how to get the normal mode running again so I can continue addressing the virus.

Thank you for your time!

have you used that cd to reinstall latly? is it all scrached up? maby it uploaded mostly but impartially leaving your system with some incomplete files... did you watch teh installation go smooth? or were you away most of the time during the install? i hada cd cut off most of the way threw once and i had simmilar issue i didnt realize it cuz i walked away when it was installing didnt realize till the 2nd install, had to get a new cd... you could also try

You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows

If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.
you can also try BOOTCFG /rebuild

"have you used that cd to reinstall latly? is it all scrached up?"

I actually worked from stuff I downloaded from the web, apparently not that reliable. I guess I shoulda known better, but I've been in a bit of a panic to be honest..

"maby it uploaded mostly but impartially leaving your system with some incomplete files... did you watch teh installation go smooth? or were you away most of the time during the install? "

The installation was running and then seemed to stall. And then the entire machine stalled. That's when I rebooted.

Thanks for the tips, I'll try them and post results here!

You should return to your thread in the security forum, post a Hijack this log and let log experts help you remove it. Patience is necessary--only so many malware experts (they have blue or gold shields next to their names) are available to work on these kinds of issues.

Download hijackthis here:

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click Edit > Select All> Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply in your thread in the security forum.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Oh, and one more question: I'm editing texts for a book with a deadline coming up - is it safe for me to send wordfiles to my editor, or do I risk spreading the Trojan around?
