Good day to you all; When powering up my Windows XP the black XP screen with the blue indicating bars; this section restarts or reloads it seems to reload again with a black screen for 1 second between; this is before the welcome screen where it says loading the system.

The following section was the advice given in an earlier post; I am wondering if this could be the simple answer.
……………………………………….
Reboot in safe mode without networking - Tap "F8" while booting, and select that option.

START / RUN, then type TEMP, and press ok.
highlight and deleted all files. ignore files that will not delete. Close that window, then empty recycle bin.
Repeat above, replacing TEMP, with PREFETCH.

Hi, are you then able to log in and reach the desktop?

Check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.
http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Valuable_links
------
Download Security Check by screen317
http://screen317.spywareinfoforum.org/
Save it to your Desktop.

Double click the install icon.
A command Prompt window will open.
Let it scan the Pc - press any key when asked.
It should now open in Notepad - and will save a log called checkup.txt.
Post the result of the scan here.

Or download SINO by Artellos.

  • Save SINO to your desktop and run SINO.exe.
  • Then please check the following checkboxes:
    Code:
    Startup Items
  • Once checked, hit the Run Scan! button and wait for the program to finish the scan.
  • A notepad window will pop up. Please copy all of the content into your next reply.
Note: If you try to interact with the program once it’s started scanning it might appear to hang. The scan however will continue.

Uninstall Spybot - Search & Destroy - it used to be the best Spyware program, sadly no longer true.

Unchecked all entries Except C:\Program Files\Avg. This made no difference after a restart.

Have you used Microsoft's scanner if so what do you think of it?

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-gb/default.aspx

System Restore will not restore back, it is unticked allowing it to operate.

I know about Microsoft's scanner - but have never used it as there are better scanners available like MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware
Download MalwareBytes - follow suggestions in post # 10

Once the trial peroid expires it will revert to the Free version - so keep it installed.

As you have run System File Checker - run a hard drive test.

This may or not be helpful with your start up problem, but.
Post a Hjt log - to see what is running on your system.
Hijack this 2.04
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Also post the uninstall log from Hjt log
Start HiJackThis.
At the bottom right - Other Stuff
Click on Config > Misc Tools.
Click > Open Uninstall Manager.
Click > Save List.
Save the uninstall list file on your desktop.
It will then open in Notepad.
Click Edit > Select All > Edit > Copy-and-Paste the uninstall list in the reply box.
