Hi, I'm new to the forum and this is really the first one I've ever tried to get in with. You lot seem rather knowledgeable so I'm hoping you can help me.

My laptop is 5 years old now, and I'm still running xp because i'm too poor to upgrade. I've tried a few things here and there to keep things running well enough, I've reformatted the hard-drive; reloaded the OS a few times and they help for a while but then things slow down again. Now i'm having some new problems. My start-up programs don't always load, desktop icons don't always run, my internet connects, but my browsers won't browse, this sort of thing.

Here's my HJT, any advice or suggestions are helpful. I Run CA Security Suite and Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.4

Your computer definitely needs a memory upgrade. 500 MB is just not enough to run XP (in today's scenario). I suggest you look into adding 512MB RAM to make it 1GB totally in order to be able to use it.

Google Chrome runs every Tab/Extension as a separate process and it may be overwhelming for a weak computer like yours. I recommend you use Mozilla Firefox..

and Why do you use CA Antivirus? In my experience Microsoft Security Essentials (An Antivirus from Microsoft) is very good and I think your PC will be able to run it. Give it a try.

If you are using the laptop just for browsing the Internet, I suggest you start using something like Ubuntu (It'll run a lot more smoother than XP).

Go here to download and run the uninstall utility so you can get CA Internet Security Suite completely out of your computer.

After it's gone, use the link that you were given to download and install Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.657.0.

After all of the above has been done, submit a new HiJackThis log here.

A lot more work will still need to be done.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

What's the full model number of that Toshiba Satellite A105?

There should be a dash and then a few more characters after A105.

Is CA no good? It's seems to have worked well for me so far, seems to keep my computer safe enough. Something I don't know about it? And the full model number is A105-S2031.

In my experience CA has missed a lot of Antivirus Detections. I've got a Giveaway of Panda Cloud Antivirus Professional on my blog and I still have a LOT of LEGAL licenses left. Just go here and do as per the instructions to win a license. Panda Cloud is Cloud based and is very light on system resources.

If you think you'd better be off with a free software Microsoft Security Essentials should do you good.

DISCLAIMER: I am not affiliated to Panda Security in anyway, just telling.

Alright, I ditched CA antivirus, but now i've got a new problem. Security Essentials is refusing to install give me an error message and I've tried to fix a few things, but I think the problem is that WIndows Installer is refusing to run and now seems to no longer exist. Any help?

The Toshiba Satellite A105-S2031 supports up to 2048 MB(2 GB) of RAM and uses 200-pin DDR2 PC2-4200 SODIMM modules.

    http://www.memoryx.net/a105s2031.html

According to your "computer specifications", it currently has 512 MB of RAM, so you should increase the amount to 1024 MB(1 GB) or 2048 MB(2 GB), especially if you're going to use a system-hungry full security suite.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

If you've uninstalled CA Internet Security Suite and restarted the computer, go into the C:\Program Files folder and delete the leftover CA folder, if it's still there.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

Let's see a new HiJackThis log.

Let's see what's installed in that computer that may need to be updated, uninstalled, or replaced.

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

    Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

    It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Go to these 2 temp folders:

    C:\WINDOWS\Temp

    C:\Documents And Settings\Bradley Kelley\Local Settings\Temp

Once they're open and you can view their contents, select and delete everything from inside them.

If a few files resist deletion, leave them alone and delete everything else.

After you're done, restart the computer.

Give me 20 - 30 minutes to review your uninstall list and reply. In the meantime, get those 2 temp folders cleaned out.

Okay, I got everything cleaned out except these two:

    etilqs_kisVyxjeHqy0PLp6c2sZ
    etilqs_TYIp85jis5QGZLzLyyQN

they're in the Temp folder under my docs and settings and are "in use by another program"

Uninstall these programs and add-ons because they're unneeded or are very outdated:

    uTorrent

    Adobe Reader 7.0

    Apple Software Update

    Belarc Advisor 7.2

    Google Update Helper

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4

    Macromedia Flash Player 8

    MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB954430)

    MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB973688)

    RealPlayer Basic

    Skype 3.8

    Viewpoint Media Player

    VLC Media Player 1.0.5

After they've all been uninstalled, restart the computer.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Download and save these programs and add-ons:

    Foxit Reader 4.3.1.0118

    Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.23

    Adobe Flash Player ActiveX 10.1.102.64

    Adobe Flash Player Plugin 10.1.102.64

(Click the green icon at each site)

    MSXML 4.0 SP3

    (Click the "msxml.msi" link)

After they've all been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then install them.

Foxit Reader 4.3.1.0118 will replace the very outdated Adobe Reader for reading online PDF documents and manuals.

Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.23 will replace the very outdated java version in that computer.

Adobe Flash Player 10.1.102.64 activeX and plugin will update the version you need for Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

MSXML 4.0 SP3 will replace the outdated version in that computer.

After they've all been installed, restart the computer.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

There are other programs that need to be downloaded and installed, and others that may need to be updated, but we'll get to that later.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

It's normal to have one or a few files resist deletion.

You were able to access both temp folders, correct?

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

I've given you a list of programs and add-ons to uninstall and to download and install, so that'll keep you busy for awhile.
