I have a 486SX processor with a CPU Pentium-MMX. I have a new hard drive (1TB). I loaded Windows XP and found it will not start up. When restarting the system, it will finish going through the beginning (I uploaded a pitcher). If I boot from the CD, the screen goes black. If I go through the C:\ prompt, nothing will happen just a black screen. I'm thinking it might be the video card. I'm thinking about replacing it with a better one. I hope this makes sense.

You didn't provide a description of your computer, but based on its processor(Intel Pentium 200 MHz) and memory(EDO), it appears to be a 1996 - 1997 model which came with Windows 95.

If I recall correctly, its BIOS won't support a hard drive with a capacity larger than 37 GB.

Hi Flavallee. This computer is a no-name system. I don't have any more info on it then what I listed. Sorry. I was thinking about what you said. I need to try and update the BIOS. Do you know a good site to go to?

Updating the Bios won't help, that PC is simply too old.

How did you connect the 1TB drive ? How did you 'load' XP ?

What happens if you do NOT 'Press any key to boot from CD' ?
Is the 1TB hard drive the only hard drive ?

It will just sit there. I'm going to put a 360GB drive in and put 95 back on it. The whole purpose for this computer is to run all my old DOS games.

Be aware that if you're online, that OS will be at risk from virus, and other malware threats.
I think Win 98 will work for you too, with only a mere slighter risk.
Perhaps a dedicated PC will serve your purpose.

So do your DOS, but disconnect from the Web while enjoying your game :)
