Windows Explorer either does not read at all or takes forever to read the contents of a folder.
Other programs, Word Perfect, instantly reads the folder so I can attach a file from within.

Any ideas as what is wrong?

    Hiya

When you say attaching files, is this a problem with email, eg Outlook Express? Or is it the viewing of folders in general?

Either way, lets have a look at your HT log:

go to www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

    Regards

    eddie

    Thank you for the direction.
Looking at this I see the remains of McAfee and maybe Norton FW & AV. I do still have WinFax which is Symantec.
Just this morning I used WE to go to my E drive and looked into a folder. Nothing appeared and when after several minutes I red Xed, I was told "not responding". When I Ended my system went dark for a few seconds and my tool bar was missing the Quick Launch group.
    Any thoughts will be appreciated.

I see you have the Winkiller virus, so moving you to Security, where they should be able to help you more. Still getting to grips with these logs myself :)

Hi Eddie, I don't know that I have the WinKiller virus. A quick search of Google for WinKiller is flush with references to X1. However, I have a valid program "X1". Also my slowdown/complete failure to read certain folders goes back before I added X1.

Hello and thank you. I followed your instructions but still have problems. First, the LimeShop folder doesn't seem to exist. Nothing in C:\program files by that name. Can folders be hidden? The first time I used WinExplorer to look at one of the folders that had been slow, it was PERFECT. Instant display. I closed WE and tried again and it hung up. After a bit it said "not responding". When I closed the folder, the screen flashed, went black and when it repainted, the display in the Taskbar, lower right, was smaller by half. Now I DL Total Commander and tried it. TC on the same folder is an instant display of the contents.
    Thoughts?

The folder may be hidden. Go to Windows Explorer | Tools. Options. View tab. Tick Show Hidden Files and Folders, apply and OK.

What happens if you go via My Computer? Does that freeze?

Hi Eddie, the Show Hidden files was already checked. Using X1 which indexes everything the only place Limeshop appears on my computer is in the Hijack report. I am going to rerun Hijack, but not send to you, just to see if it pops up again. BTW what is the file or source material for the Hijack report?
If I use My Computer as the starting point WE, or whatever is running, works fine.
Aha, I have a MS keyboard with buttons for Word, Excel, WE etc. I just tested WE using the button is a problem. WE started thru My Computer or Start/Programs/Access. works fine. Just when I use the button or so it seems. I'm going to test this. You can take a break. I think we may have solved a mystery. But before I go let me give you another. Start/Search doesn't work. Search from WE works fine, although with X1 I probably won't need it. However, does either of these events fit a pattern or indicate a future problem? Thanks for you help. I'll give you a progress report in a couple of days on both Limeshop and WE keyboard start.
