I guess this first post is mainly information gathering.....

Apparantly my mom's computer has winlogonhook and lop.AS trojans on it. What I am confused about is that AVG only shows lop.AS but Spy Sweeper only shows winlogonhook. Why is it that each only shows one but not both? The only reason that I had her install Spy Sweeper is that I read that it could be a fix for lop.AS. She just has the trial version of that so it is used for detection only at this point. Is Spy Sweeper known for giving false positives to try and get people to purchase it? I will be picking her computer up in a couple of hours so I can post a hijackthis log in the near future. But wanted to see if it is common for AVG and Spy Sweeper to differ so drastically.

Thanks in advance...and be back soon with more details on her computer....

Hi bobdole007,
From what you say I think you need to post a HijackThis log and then wait for someone qualified (gold shield next to their name) to take you through what needs to be done. Please go no further than the steps below and posting your results for now.You may want to print off this guide just in case.

Using Hijackthis with the self-installer that puts it into Program Files for you:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
• Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
• Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Once you've done this, wait and you'll get great help.

Richard.

while I was getting onto the forums to post this I had AVG do a couple of pop-ups about lop.AS saying they were in temporary internet files. Did a heal on them but I know that didn't solve anything. Figured I should make a note of that (had 2 more pop ups as I was typing this...blah).

O20 - Winlogon Notify: winuns32 - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\winuns32.dll

that doesn't look like a good thing to me....anyways back to my computer so I can get this one offline before it gets into more trouble. Thanks again

Download Combofix to your desktop:

* Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
* When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
• Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
• Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the quote box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
• Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
• Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
• Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
• Click Done
• Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
• Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
• It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
• On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
• After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
• The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply. with a fresh HJT log

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

now Start killbox,

Then on killbox top bar press tools/delete temp files, in the pop up box towards the middle is a drop down box containing a list of all user accounts on this drop down user account box, select your account, select ALL options it will allow you to, then then press delete selected temp files , then repeat for every user account listed in that drop down box

then let us know how it is

update spysweeper & avg and run scans
they might few a few traces to clean up but hopefully all teh main problems have been dealt with

next

Turn off system restore by following instructions here
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/forum/index.php?page=8
That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.

go here http://forums.techguy.org/t208517/s.html for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.
and scan here http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ for out of date & vulnerable common applications on your computer

Then pay an urgent visit to windows update & make sure you are fully updated & get the bunch of new updates that are alleged to plug the security holes that let these pests on in the first place

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
• Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

well I ran AVG and it found generic.3 (something close to that) trojan. Then did spysweeper and it still shows winlongonhook. Maxifiles and hi5toolbar are gone. But now I see purityscan listed as being found. Unfortunately I have to get this computer back to my mom as she needs to do some word processing. She's not going to take it online and I should be able to get it back in a couple of days. Sounds like I shouldn't do the restore point as the system still isn't clean. Thank you for all the help, if you have more suggestions I'll go with them when I can get the computer back.
