in the last few weeks my computer, winXP Home, has been taking 5 minutes to shut down (or restart if I'm installing etc).
It does shutdown, but it takes such a long time.
I'm pretty sure it began whem I installed the new patches/packs when the lovesan worm came around.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

    P4 1.6GHz
    1.024 GB SDRam
    GF4 MX440 64MB
    XP Home
    ASUS P4B mobo

    Cheers,
    Pete

    go into regedit/local machine/system
    click on the control folder
then in the right hand pane highlight "wait to kill"
then click on the edit button and change fron 20000ms to 500ms
if this does not solve the problem then run your
    virus checker
    adaware
    spybot
then if problem still persists run hijack and post the log

I've done most of the registry stuff, waittokill timeout etc etc with no change.

I also do spybot daily, adaware weekly and AVG virus weekly

    What is Hijack?

Make sure you don't have update Q329170. If you do remove it in add/remove programs and reboot. The first time you shutdown you won't see a difference. You need to restart it a second time for the PC to react to not having that update. It really is not needed by the average user and almost always causes delays on shutdown.

go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.
