I have an external hard drive plugged into a WinXp desktop computer. I share the desktop with s/o, so I use said HDD everyday. The problem I have is that when I shut down the computer and reboot, the drive is unmounted/ejected/whatever, so I have to unplug & replug in the drive to use it. It is not a backup drive. We have one of those and it shows up every time.

Is there a way to make this Windows see this HDD when it starts up?

Could be several causes. Try a different USB port (swap with the backup drive if possible). If the problem follows the drive, the issue is likely with the external drive.
