I'm running Win XP Pro and I think I have a worm. I ran NAV and it doesn't come up with anything (I have all the latest updates for NAV and XP). Anyway, what is happening is Windows is lagging big time on startup, Ctrl+Alt+Delete will not bring up task manager, and in order to shut down the computer, I have to do a hard shutdown. I've read many of the posts here and don't know if I'm in the right forum (yeah I'm a new guy). I ran Hijackthis and hope someone can help. Here's the log

See if theres an entry for "global dialer" in add/remove prorams........if so,uninstall it.

Re-boot into safe mode[by tapping the F8 key as windows starts]
    and delete:
    C:\Program Files\ClearSearch
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\internetfeatures.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\iefeatures.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\WGAUOMW.exe
c:\program files\GlobalDialer [IF THE FOLDER IS STILL THERE]

If the files aren't visible then
Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files". Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Download AdAware 6 181 from here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    Then......

Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    Then.........

Go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

Then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu)

    Now re-boot...

    Then
Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED

    Re-boot....
    Post another log after
    ;)

Did everything you told me to do with no effect. One thing though, none of these files were on my computer.

    C:\Program Files\ClearSearch
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\internetfeatures.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\iefeatures.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\WGAUOMW.exe
c:\program files\GlobalDialer [IF THE FOLDER IS STILL THERE]

    Still have these effects:

Takes forever for windows to load
    Can't access desktop properties
    Can't access task manager
Can only shut down by turning power off

I can't find this problem anywhere.

NAV is truly a great AntiVirus. But it is known to cause problems. I am not saying to remove it though. Also, do you have any programs starting up with your computer that take a lot of resources? (Hint: Look in your taskbar, to the left of the clock.) Also, if you think you really have a worm, go to here and do a free virus scan. If it finds anything, minimize the current window, go here, and click on virus encyclopedia. Then type the name of the virus in the box and hit quick search.

One a final thought, if you are interested in a better AntiVirus, go here.

There is also an AntiVirus better than NAV, not better than NOD32, yet it is 100 % free. To download it, click here.

I appreciate both your help. I finally took care of the problem by just running scan disk. Again thank you both for the advice.
