I'm going to donate a pc to charity and want to make sure the hard drive has no personal info on it. Any suggestions as to how to do this, the quickest way? Thanks very much!

The quickest and most secure way would be to wipe the entire hard drive. This would also remove any installed programs and the Windows operating system. It would also wipe any recovery partition that may be on the drive. This would make the computer pretty much useless until an operating system was installed.

Darik's Boot And Nuke (DBAN) is one free program that can be set to fill the hard drive with random bits several times over. This could take hours for a large drive but would just about ensure that not even the FBI could get any data off of it. EDIT: Once you start DBAN and select your wiping options, it will run unattended until done.

Thanks Chuck. Is there an option in DBAN to do a Quick Wipe? I need something that is quick. Please advise. TY!

I believe DBAN has an option to just fill the entire drive with zeros which should be good enough for most purposes. Someone would probably need to take the drive apart to try to get any data off of it.

If you know which files or folders you want deleted, there are file shredding programs that will just overwrite those files with zeros or random bits. You just need to be sure to do all of the files, in particular, things like e-mail files that would not normally be in you "My Documents" folder.

depending upon the size, dban can run for about 30-60 minutes, but if this is a pc that you don't want anything to be recovered from, I'd definitely use dban. It's what we use at my company for rigs that we are donating, and while nothing, shy of destruction, is guaranteed, it's still DoDm certified.
