    hello,
i am in the process of setting up a business and we have brought the server from a previous company and added a 5 port switch to it. But after setting up wireless internet yesterday my bosses internet will not work when the server is plugged into his laptop. However it works fine on mine. Sorry if my terminology is a little poor but i tried my best, any help would be much helpful

    thanks

Please show for his (if Windows) and your (if Windows) computers ...l

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

    Type the following command:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I don't understand what you mean by "server is plugged into his laptop." Both computers seem to be connected by wireless to the same router and to nothing else.

Yes, different. Now shows an ethernet connection with static IP configuration apparently to the same router as the wireless connection. Is it really to the same router? Is this the configuration for which "internet will not work"? If so, can you be more specific by what you mean? Still the same problem if the wireless is disconnected?

yes, that is for the one that isn't working. when the cable from the server to the laptop is plugged in, the internet page will not display. But when i unplug the server cable it will connect to the internet (through wireless). I don't see how the cable can be also internet because the wireless router is only plugged into the internet socket thing, and the power cable, it isn't plugged in to anything else. I'm very confused haha

Are you expecting to get internet access through the server? How does the server get internet access? While it is probably not causing the problem you are complaining about, why are you using the same IP address subnet on the server and on the router? What are you trying to accomplish with this setup?

For comparison please show an ipconfig /all for your laptop connected to the server.

At a minimum you'll have to remove the Default Gateway from the ethernet connection. I've never seen an official confirmation, but there's lots of anecdotal evidence that given a choice of Default Gateways Windows always chooses wired over wireless (even if the wired is dial-up).
