Wireless Network Inconsistent Upstairs Vs. Downstaiirs.

    Several months ago we started having problems accessing the internet via our wireless network when upstairs in our house. The router is downstairs, and we have no problems with our laptops or iPhones when downstairs. However, when upstairs, even though the wireless signal is good to excellent in strength, and we can connect, we get a "Limited or No Connection" message on our laptops the vast majority of the time. (Ironically, I am typing this message while sitting upstairs...one of the few times I'm able to access the internet upstairs these days.) Sometimes, when I run the troubleshooter on my laptop, I get a message that the computer doesn't recognize the network. Why would this be different upstairs than it is downstairs? With our phones, we just turn of our wireless when we're upstairs, so they don't even try to connect.

    This is a fairly recent development--within the last several months.

    some other network may be interfering or on same ssid name

    lets see an xirrus screen shot from downstairs and upstairs - make sure we know which is which

    Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
    Download and install

    If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
    Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

    Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
    if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

    post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

    To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

    For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better.
