I am having a cable modem installed in a couple of weeks and have to make a decision whether to go wireless or wired. Any helpful advice which way to go will be appreciated.

    hewittfe,

It mostly depends on what you plan to do, where you plan to have every thing (router, computers, etc.).

If you are just planning to surf the 'net then wireless will suffice. If you plan to do a lot of file transfers between computers then wired would be preferred. Routers are pretty cheap these days so I would recommend buying a wireless router since most come with 4 wired ports (Linksys even has one with 8 ports) and you can disable the wireless side until you are ready to use it.

If you plan to use laptops at all or plan to put the router in one room and have computers throughout your house, then wireless is easier (in theory since depending on the construction of your house and other wireless devices around can quickly limit the range of the wireless router).

To summarize, buy a wireless router. Run cables where you can. Use wireless when needed.

    Good Luck!
