I'm trying to hook up a wireless connection in my home. When the DSL is connected regularly through the modem it works just fine. But when I hook up the Netgar router and try to set it up so that my son's laptop can have wireless, the internet will not connect. I get an error that gives me the option to redial but that never works either.

We tried a Belkin router (It just stopped working recently), then tried linksys, and now Netgar.

    Thanks in advance.

Do you power cycle the modem when switching from computer to router?

Have you properly configured the WAN (internet) section of the router for your service?

Go to the websites of the routers. You can download the instructions there.

The bottom line: Routers are generally designed to work out-of-the-box for a cable modem. The same settings will not work for a DSL modem, which requires an ADSL setup to include the password you received when you got the service.

If this DSL "modem" is really a modem/router, the failure of a new router may be easy to explain. How about the exact make/model of both the DSL "modem" and the new router you're trying to connect?

Power cycling can be unplugging the power cord for about 30 seconds and plugging it back in.
