    Hello all,

I am looking to expand my home wifi and am looking for some reliable advice. Specifically, I have a mother in law apartment connected to a detached garage that my daughter just moved into, and she is looking to get some reliable wifi in the area. She can jump on our home wifi from one room, not from her bedroom area, and the signal over-all is not that great.

I have already ran ethernet out to the building.

Now I am wondering what would produce best over-all results...

    Should I:

    A) Setup a 2nd wifi router in her area, complete with a new SSID? Keep in mind, she does tend to come over to our place a few times a day at least.

    B) Setup the 2nd wifi router as an access point?

    C) Setup the 2nd wif router as a repeater or an extender?

Honestly, I have been searching for over an hour for a video tutorial or explanation that might enlighten me as to which is my best course, and I have been striking out, so any info you can provide is greatly appreciated!! I would also go for a link to an article or video that you might have or be aware of. Anything informative.

Doing (C) kinda dumb since you already have an ethernet cable to the location.

Do (A) if you want her network protected from yours; do (B) if you want just one local area network.

Pretty sure that the answer to your last question is "no," but "lose performance" compared to what?

Option B is the optimal one. In general option A and B will perform the same, but there are some caveats which may be more theoretical than actual depending on the usage of the network. Option A can perform worse depending on the network load because you're running network traffic through the router portion of the wireless router. Where as option B, bypasses the router portion.

One thing which may or may not be relevant, none of the options are optimal if you want to have seamless roaming between the two locations.
