My uncle has a wireless xp laptop and using dsl modem. I want to share the same connection with him. I have 98 laptop and its not wireless. Someone tried to install the adapter, but it wouldn't connect. So, I returned the item back. Either the person didn't install and set it up right. Or it wouldn't connect at all. Before I returned it, the guy at the store try to connect it with his computer and it worked there. Don't know why it didn't work at home. Any ideas?

I suspect the guy at the shop wasn't running Windows '98. There may be a workaround to the driver problem but is your version of '98 the '98SE?

it's time for an upgrade

There'll be plenty of recommendations for that over on the Linux Board but I daresay you'll want to stay with Windows. :D

Seriously, though, if the machine is of a '98 vintage you've done well to keep it going so long and if it still has life in it, a Linux OS will have no problems finding ways of connecting.
