This is a strange problem. I have been using my Toshiba Satellite M45 Notebook (XP Home SP2) for about 3 months using the wireless connection. works fine. I believe the Ethernet wired connection worked when I bought it too but I can't remember.

Recently, I tried to connect to the internet using regular wired Ethernet on my home network using Internet Explorer (IE).

IE will only connect to 2 pages. Google and Toshibadirect.com. Everything else times out.

I tried Mozilla Firefox with the exact same results.

When connected via the wire, I can ping to any web site I want, Yahoo, etc and get a response... but not their website.

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated!

Are you disabling or turning off the wireless adapter when trying this?

Is your TCP/IP configuration set to obtain automatically?

Any problem devices...netword adapters...showing up in device manager?

Make sure wireless adapter is off or disabled, power off then power on the modem and try again.

If no go, post results of ipconfig /all here.

Going back and forth between wired and wireless from the same system can cause some problems.

Try power cycling the router when changing as well as rebooting the computer.

You can also try these commands to reset the winsock:

You could try to reset the TCP/IP stack and WINSOCK with these procedures and see if that cleans out the problem.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset [log_file_name]

Note: the log_file_name needs to be specified, e.g. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Thanks DB but no luck.
Tried both the commands with log files created.
winsock reset seemed to have no effect on the log file. everything looks the same at first glance.
tcp/ip reset log file added/deleted some entries.

IE or Firefox problem is still the same. I can however now connect to techguy.org OK. Still can't connect to yahoo or most other sites when wired. very strange.

Got in contact with Toshiba Laptop support. These guys were patient and went thru the same steps I've read here. Problem turned out to be the driver for the Network card from Marvell. Downloaded the driver dated 1/20/06 and now Internet works fine when hooked up with the yellow ethernet cable.:)
