    got it sorted...

i looked at where my router was getting its DNS from...
then i pointed the laptop DNS to the same address...
it works like a dream...but why...

where would the laptop be getting "automatic DNS from" and why would it take so long...
was it a lot of querying going on?

as important to fix something...is to understand how to fix it.

It should obtain IP and DNS settings automatically. Try resetting the router (factory reset, look in manual) and see if that helps.
