When I play back cd's using windows media player 9 in digital playback mode, I get sound from my left and right speakers only. The problem is that I should be getting sound from 4 speakers total, front right, left and rear right and left. In order to get sound from all 4 speakers playing a cd with WMP9 I have to switch it to analog playback.

Can someone please help me understand why?

Have you got a true digital sound system connected, or an analog one?

If you describe the equipment it may help.

    Sound Blaster Live 5.1 digital

    Creative Labs 5.1 inspire 5200.

The sound blaster card does not have a digital output but supports digital mode through the analog mini jack connectors.

My speaker set is properly connected to my sound card. The setup is legit if you will. Nothing fancy or mickey mouse. I get 5.1 sound just as a so called "true 5.1 system would get 5.1 sound"

My card splits the channels for the speaker set and the speaker set does its job. My card supports the supposed true 5.1 way with digital mode through the minijack connectors though it doesn't have the digital output. My speaker set has no digital decoder but my sound card does.
