I started getting a startup message saying that a .dll file was missing, with a name that had no results in google and was was most likely a randomly generated name. I went into msconfig and found 2 blank startup items.

I then went into regedit and found an entry with a different seemingly randomly generated name that contained a directory for that same dll. I deleted that and one of the blank registry items dissapeared and the message has stopped displaying on startup.

I'm just wondering what had happened and if i took the right course of action.

Do you remember what was that .dll?

Often, an unknown missing .dll file pop-up at startup is related to a recent malware removal.

You may still have traces of it though.

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    Do not fix anything

The registry entry was "mqanazuculenela" and the missing file was "orocayewi.dll". I did recently scan and fix with spybot search and destroy before the problem started, and i also have a trojan showing up in windows malicious software removal tool scans called "Win32/Pushbot.gen!C" which it says to use a virus scanner to remove, but i've tried AVG and avast! adn neither found it.

    It was malware alright.

Your log is not showing any traces of it. It might be gone but HijackThis doesn't show everything.

However, your computer is infected. Please click on Report and kindly ask to be moved to the Malware Removal & HijackThis Logs forum. From there, be patient. You should get an answer within the next 48 hours. These guys are really busy!

I just opened AVG anti-virus and it quarrentined the file of that name. This caused windows to begin a shutdown, but i quickly cancelled it with shutdown -a and have begun a scan.

    Hi and Welcome,

    Please do the following:

Please download DDS from either of these links

    LINK 1
    LINK 2

and save it to your desktop.
    • Disable any script blocking protection
    • Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
    • When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
    • Save both reports to your desktop.
    ---------------------------------------------------
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

    DDS.txt
    Attach.txt.

    NEXT

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. It will be a randomly named executable.
    • Double click the exe file.
    • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

    • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked
      • IAT/EAT
      • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
      • Show All (don't miss this one)
    • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
    • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
    • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

    **Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Hi, what did you use? Is there a log? Do you remember what it removed?

Please try and run GMER in safe mode.

Make sure you have all other windows closed and all your security programs disabled.

just check "sections" and the C:\ drive

I scanned with malwarebytes and the file it removed was "fr08v101.exe". I have a few logs from it here. I will try and run GMER in safe mode.

I've finished the scan in safe mode. It took 5 hours and wouldn't exit safe mode after, so i had to do a hard reset.

    Hi,

    Please do the following:

First we need to disable your CD Emulation drivers:

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.
Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
    • The application window will appear
    • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
    • Click Yes to continue
    • A 'Finished!' message will appear
    • Click OK
    • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.
Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

    NEXT

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    * IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

    • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
    Notes:
    1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
    2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
