Relatives XP Home. Three week old HP set up with 1 user and no logon screen. Makes it through POST, starts Windows, but hangs at welcome screen. Will not enter safe mode. Restoring to most recent good configuration from F8 menu results in same outcome. Has me stumped. I must troubleshoot through novice via telephone at this point.
Any suggestions?

Does your relative have an Xp cdrom disk?

If they have a XP disk, try chkdsk and see if that helps.

No. HP with "12" CD's burned as recovery at initial startup. They have a recovery option at boot along with setup, but...

Thats too bad........Only thing you can do is have them perform a non-destructive recovery. They will need to press F10 repeatidly until they get to the recovery setup on boot.
When the Recovery screen appears, click Next, and then click Yes to perform a normal, non-destructive recovery.
