    Hi There,

I'm having a really frustrating problem with Word 2007. And I'm in the middle of essay writing! :(

Just in the last week or so, when I try to 'save as' in Word, it freezes up or hangs then comes up with the not responding error message as follows:

Microsoft Office word is not responding
    (options to)
    Close the program
Wait for the program to respond

It will ususally restart the program and come back to the file I was working on, in which case I can save.

It has no problem saving. But it is when I save as that it is not working.
Obviously this means I can't do a back up and that's making me nervous!

It is also doing the same thing when I try and Close Word. It will give me this message and then reopen the program with a blank document.

I'm wondering if it might be an update causing a problem? Though i'm not sure how they are managed on my computer - I think i'm set for automatic windows updates.

I also use Endnote X3 (an academic bibliography database management software) which is linked into Word. I don't know if that might be causing some kind of conflict?
The thing is that I"ve written many large essays with these programs, and it is only now in the last week or two that I am having this recurring problem.

My computer is a Dell Studio laptop, about 8 months old.
    4Gb SDRAM
    Intel 2 duo Processor T6600 (2.2ghz)
    Windows 7 operating system
    Word 2007

I'm afraid I have really limited tech skills, so may not understand complex solutions.
If any further information is needed - let me know.
Any assitance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

    - Laura

Sorry, should also have mentioned that my McAfee virus scan is clean.
I ran a scan disk and a defrag as well.

    thanks

What is your default "Save Path"?

    Hi Dave,

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by save path?
Do you mean where it is automatically saved to?
If so, then just a folder in the documents section of the C drive.

What happens if you Start Word and the Open a existing file?

Also with Word closed, using Windows Explorer, browse to your Documents folder and the the sub folder that you have been trying to save as to and delete any and all "Temporary" files.

    Hi Dave,

    Thanks for your assistance.
I only had this file in the folder so no other temp files in it, or in the upper folders.

I ended up contacting Endnote because it was just driving me nuts.

They advised following these steps which -cross fingers!- so far has cured the problem:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;921541

It looks complex (for the technically illiterate!) but just follow the steps and voila.
I hope this helps for anyone else having similar issues!

    thanks again

Thanks for posting that link, Troubleshootme! I have been having a different issue, with Word crashing whenever I open it, had been trying lots of things for over a week.

I followed your link and it looks like promising results, hopefully that solved it.

    I appreciate the info.

    Hi all,

This is quite strange. I have had exactly the same problem as Troubleshootme. It started on Aug 6th. I am writing my thesis so I'm rather annoyed, too and I have tried a lot of things, including installing and uninstalling Office 2007. But nothing has helped. Sometimes I find that disabling McAfee seems to let me save and exit the document but that doesn't always work. I have tried various things in the link you have posted, Troubleshootme (including deleting parts of the registry key) but nothing has worked so far. Which of the various steps made the problem go away for you?
