Sounds like the file association has been changed.

Holding the shift key down right click on any doc file and click on "Open With". Make sure the check is in the open with all the time box and then find winword.exe and open the file.

If this does not work then you will probably have to run the repair and detect in word under Help.

If that will not work then Office might have to be reinstalled.

If you know how to make a screenshot, would you please post one, to show what the squares look like? That might be a valuable clue.

    Just reread this.

The file associations are right, when you open the file what are you trying to open them as?

In the bottom of the open window where you click on the file you want to open at the bottom is a place called

    Files of Type

Make sure the setting is right here. Sounds like you are trying to open them with the wrong file type.

When I first read this, I thought that the "squares" described the file icons. But now, I'm thinking that shanoa means that the actual document page... after opening the document... is full of squares, instead of letters and words. Rick, is that what you're thinking too? shanoa, could you please clarify what you meant?

You probably had the Klez worm, and I'm afraid that means that your *.doc files may have been overwritten.

In that case they can unfortunately not be recovered.

    Additionally, from http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected] :

" On the 6th of every odd numbered month (except January or July), the worm attempts to overwrite with zeroes files that have the extensions .txt, .htm, .html, .wab, .doc, .xls, .jpg, .cpp, .c, .pas, .mpg, .mpeg, .bak, or .mp3.

If the month is January or July, this payload attempts to overwrite all files with zeroes, not just those with the aforementioned extensions"
