Open Word. Click Tools | Options. Click on the File Locations tab. Highlight Startup. Click the Modify button. Are there any files in the folder that displays? If so, that's why several windows are opening.

I'm not sure I understand, but perhaps this is what's happening:

Used to be, Word 97 would have only one taskbar button for all documents. Now, Word 2000 creates one taskbar button for EACH document. There's only one way to change this and that's by using a really bad template as a workaround. Anyone I know that has used the template ends up getting rid of it and just living with the extra buttons on the taskbar.

Now, Excel, same thing. However, Excel gives the option to turn it off by going to Tools-Options, View tab and unchecking "windows in taskbar".

If that's not what you're talking about, could you provide more description of exactly what you see and how it occurs?

...and on the 6th ??? LOL

i think you mean the quick launch tool bar, spearated from the task bar and systray by a gray vertical line

right click on an empty part of the task bar, see what toolbars you have checked off to appear

try deleting the shortcuts and going back to the source (somewhere like C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office)
and do the right click, send to: desktop as shortcut

once they're on the desktop, drag them back onto the quick launch toolbar

try again, the shortcuts could have gotten goofed up along the way

BTW
what happens if you start either program from the start/programs/ etc method, or even from the file directory where you made the shortcut from ?

Removed all the short cuts from the quick launch toolbar and went into the programs and created new shortcuts. Moved the short cuts from the desk top to the quick launch and got the same results.
Deleted all the short cuts and went into the expolore and created short cuts from the .exe file. moved the short cuts to the desk top and they work fine. Moved them to the quick launch and the same problem returned. Seems to be a problem with the quick launch and office. Deleted all shortcuts from the quick launch and left put them on the desk top where they work fine.
