I am being driven mad by microsoft. All I want is to be able to insert just three asterisks at the end of a section in novel I am writing but every time what I get after pressing enter is a solid horizontal line. I am an expert now at getting rid of this but is it possible to get just the three asterisks that I want?

Possible workaround: You might have to create a jpg in notepad, save *** and then paste the picture into the document.

Office is not the easiest program to get what you want. (My husband still uses WordPerfect because he finds it easier to do the formatting he wants).

Thanks, plodr. I think I might have found a solution. If I do just two asterisks then press enter that works; no solid line across the page. I can then go back using the up arrow on my keyboard and insert the third asterisk. A bit of a fiddle but I suppose I will get used to it.

It is creating what is called a border line

    Easy to stop
Go to File | Options | Proofing | AutoCorrect Options | AutoFormat As You Type and clear the check box for “Border lines” under “Apply as you type.”
