Would it be possible to secure this type of wireless access point?

I have a Nintendo WiFi USB dongle that allows my Wii and DS to get online. It provides good coverage through all three floors of my house and it's in the basement.

The other day I was poking around and found some firmware that will basically transform the dongle into a generic wireless acess point. I'm going to get a laptop soon and would like to use it wirelessly around the house, and if I don't have to go buy a wireless router, well that's a bonus in my book.

However, will I be able to secure my wireless connection if I use this type of configuration?

    Probably won't be secure.
My only thought on this is what will be providing DHCP?

A Google search found this tutorial that suggests that the WiFi USB dongle supports WEP (which may be a tiny bit better than no security at all).
