I backed up old files on CDs and now can not open some of them. They are WPS files.
A box pops up and says windows can not open the file...choose from a list. Nothing
I am doing seems to work. Any suggestions?

It is a Microsoft Works document. do you still have works on your comptuer. If not you will need to download a converter from Microsoft to open them in Word. Hopefully have that.

If you have Word installed, depending on the version this converter may work.

after downloading and installing the converter I tried to open on of the WPS files...
so I choose from the list of programs: microsoft word, hit "OK", the it tells me the file
    appears to be corrupted.

What version of Word are you running? That converter, in theory, only works for Word 97/2000/2002.

I have windows XP on my computer. When I right click - to get the properties for word,
it just said microsoft word, it didn't tell me what version.

    Start Word
Then, Help > About will tell you the version.
