The reference librarian at your local city or college library may also be a good resource. Lots of people come to them for help w.this type of thing.

I imagine that you or your friend know about the library in Salt Lake City - supposedly the largest repository for geneological-type research? Also, the library in Fort Wayne, IN [~NE corner of the state] also supposedly has the 2nd largest amount of material.

A few of the geneology sites I have on my laptop:
    http://msn.ancestry.com/
    http://www.geneology.com/
    http://www.myfamily.com/exec?c=h&htx=LoginFrontMember
http://www.census.gov/genealogy/www/namesearch.html [not much help, but some interesting data regarding freq of the name searched...]

Thanks for all the help, we have most of this info ;) I'm in the UK by the way but a lot of information we have has come from sites outside of the UK........I've gone back 6 generations but cannot find anything else without paying for stuff that may not relate to me in any way. :(
