I just purchased a Compaq laptop and it has Windoes XP pro as OS, I am unfamiliar with XP pro and am having a problem. The system will let me in as "admin" on log on and I can run the programs that are on the copmuter. I cannot add any programs or change any programs due to "You must have admin privilages"
How do I overcome this and be able to add new programs and change settings. It will not let me add any new accounts due to having no admin priviages. I would appreciate anyhelp that someone could give me to get me started with this OS. How do I become an aministrator? Help please!

If you are logging in as admin then create another personal account with administrator priveledges..

When I try to create another account, the system says that I must have admin privilages. How do I create a new account when the system will not allow it?

    Try it from safe mode.

That's what HP had me do once to get rid of an account I made then didn't want it anymore. You gotta do it in safe mode.

I would just reinstall the operating system beings you just got your laptop and make sure you follow setup carefully!

Did you ever think to ask if the laptop was new before suggesting reformat ?
