Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop - XP Pro
Not sure if the 2 issues are related, but I first noticed that my AVG was being shut down and in its place was an obvious scam security app calling itself XP AntiMalware 2010. I followed the instructions found here, which worked well in removing all the references to ave.exe; I thought I had put the issue behind me. I resumed browsing with some success...until I did a search on Google and followed the link for my desired search result - BOOM! hijacked re-direct.
I'm pretty tech-savvy (10+ years of IT experience), but admittedly security is not my forte.
I have Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D downloaded and ready if I need to post logs. If it's another app I need to use, please advise.
I was going to do a System Restore from 2 days ago, but I cannot perform a restore as my system now fails to shut down gracefully (which System Restore requires) with a "STOP: c000021a" error.
Thanks,
