I have recently installed a new wireless netgear router and this has prompted XP (home ed) to start asking for a password on start-up. I used to have a password on start-up but it was removed when I had some previous problems. However the old password is not working, please help!

    many thanks, Jack

Are you talking about the Windows logon password, not the routers

    If Windows:

Then go to Safe mode (repeatedly press F8 on Windows startup)
Logon to Administrator (hopefully no password on that account)
Go to Users in Control Panel
    Select your normal user account
    Select Remove Password
    OK
    Restart back to normal

You should be able to logon directly to Windows
By the way, you may wish to set up a password !

If all is then ok, you can mark the thread as Solved, under Thread Tools - only you can do this

will do, I am at work and computer is at home so all being well will mark as solved this evening, if not will a re-install be the only other option, and if so am I in danger of losing any files I have stored?

Yes, if you try re-install - it is possible to corrupt Windows and thus lose data

My Safe mode steps will work !

Password problem I thought this was a taboo area according to the TSG rules. Maybe I am wrong but I would suggest calling the manufacturer of the router or device requesting it.

At the present time we are unable to assist with anything to do with Passwords for anything, basically because of the fact that we can not determine the ownership of the computer and the fact that this is a security matter. Please read the Tech Support Guy rules below:

wow I can't even support on this basic issue , forgotten password.
    Incredible

If I receive another password reset request, (even MS supply this info) I will say NO techguy won't help with that, go to another forum. !!!

This is the actual quote from the rules:

Passwords - Please do not ask for assistance with forgotten passwords and/or bypassing them. As there is no way to verify the actual situation and/or intentions, no assistance will be provided and any such threads will be closed.

This is the position we have taken here to protect against possible undesirable intentions. Passwords are put in place for a reason and we are not going to assist in bypassing them.

    Closing thread.
