I updated a compaq laptop computer from ME to XP. I added 256 ram on the laptop since it only had 56.

It was working fine and I returned it to the owner and they said whenever they were using AOL it was freezing.

I started working with it and it was freezing so muchand it keep checking the disks for errors and correcting the problems. I decided to reformat and reinstall. That is completed but now when I go to windows update it freezes. I've tried typing it in, going thru explorer and trying to go to www.microsoft.com and then a link from there but as soon as it gets to the windows update address it freezes.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

If it is the latest version of AOL it has alot of bloated security features such as norton internet security suite and mcafee security suite which make it hard to surf at all. I would go for an older version of AOL to start. Next you could try the beta update page for microsoft at http://update.microsoft.com/

Thanks, tgal! I hadn't even reinstalled aol since the format and I was having problems. However, I thought I might as well give your instructions a shot..and it worked! Thanks so much. Hopefully this will stay this way now as I install all their software.

    Your help is appreciated!

I guess I spoke too soon. It is still getting all sorts of freezes. And whenever I do contrtol-alt-delete it is still frozen and doesn't appear.

It doesn't freeze in safe mode so I took everything out of start up that doesn't need to be there.

I've scanned the disk for errors.

Any other suggestions on why an upgrade would suddenly cause this machine to always freeze?

Take a look at the event logs within the Computer Management Console and look for anything that has the RED X Error and google search the messages, it might give you an idea of what might be causing the system to freeze in normal mode. Hope this helps.
