I am trying to help my sister with her computer. She has a Dell running XP. She has been on the telephone with Dell on numerous times for issues with her machine. Each time they tell her to delete her user account and make a new one. (She can't access the Internet, etc.) This doesn't seem right to me and was hoping someone might have an idea. I have asked her to download and run HiJackThis and once I have it I will post it here for her. She runs Adaware SE on a regular basis and has McAfee Firewall and Virus Scan (I think).

Sometimes problems are related to data stored in the user account files. Rather than deleting her current account, just have her create a new one and try it. No data will be lost, and you'll be able to narrow down what the problem might be. Name the account TEST, and delete it if it doesn't work. If it does work, then she'll need to back up her data and settings and create a new permanent profile/account.

Sorry it took so long to get back but she has been having lots of trouble and hasn't been online in awhile. I used remote assistance to get her back into her email and to get her HiJackThis log also.

She created new accounts and it seemed to work but the old accounts are still showing up even after she clicked on delete all user files. She is also finding that when she logs onto windows under her new user account and saves documents/pics, etc. they are showing up under her old user account. Can you tell me how to safely and competely remove the older user accounts?

She states that her computer is really slow too even when not on the Internet. Since she has dial up it is hard for me to tell using Remote Assistance because everything takes so long. I have posted her HiJackThis log under a different - Thread I think it is called. I will post it here as well so perhaps you might see something that may be causing her more problems.

If she's created a new account and new profile but when logging in has files linked to another profile, she has some pretty serious problems on the computer. Definitely back up all important data especially if she's storing files in the My Documents folder inside the profile. I would recommend deleting all user accounts and profiles following the proper steps. Don't just delete files. Leaving the Administrator account, of course, and then use it to create one new account and profile.

Like what kind of serious problems? I can't work on this any more tonight due to a nasty ear infection, but I am very curious as to what serious problems she might have.

The kind of serious problems that could lead to data loss. One day she might log in and find all her files gone.

I think I was supposed to reenable the items we had disabled with MSConfig. I did this and this is the latest post.

Was I supposed to reenable them, then restart the computer then scan? I didn't do that but this time....

Yes the new account was given Administrative Priviledges. We are working to have her log on under a different account without admin priviledges for normal activity (like browsing the web and checking email - is this right?) but we want to get as much cleared us as possible first. We are really confused. The other accounts don't show up in the "applet?" but they do show up in Explorer. Along with all the files, documents, pictures, etc that she thought she had deleted when it said "delete user files". I had her save all her important stuff to a cd in case something bad does happen.

Well it does seem odd that the files would remain after doing that. Can you "rename" the old user account folder under "Documents and Settings", if that is where you are finding it? And, if so, does that stop new stuff from being saved there?

And if you go to System Properties (press the Windows and Pause key at the same time) and select Advanced > User Profiles > Settings -- is the old account still listed there?

I made a mistake and posted this at another forum. I think I was able to delete it right away. I apologized there and had not received any responses. I thought I had read all the "read here first" before you post but I must have missed it or misunderstood. I could still use some help on this if anyone is kind enough to help and understand that I really didn't mean to jump from one forum to another. I thought it was different than this one and that perhaps I could get help there as well.

I think I have messed up, yet again. I just noticed that my last log was done with the older version of HiJackThis. I will try to get online with her again and rescan with items reenabled in MSCONFIG and use 1.99.1 and then repost. Arggg. I can't get this right this time for some reason.

 We are trying again. We reenabled all items in MSConfig and ran the new version of HiJackThis and this is the log.

All I can tell you is there is nothing in the Scanlog that sheds any light on this.

And you didn't answer my question here:

,,, if you go to System Properties (press the Windows and Pause key at the same time) and select Advanced > User Profiles > Settings -- is the old account still listed there?
