Can you boot into safe mode? If you can then run msconfig and see that it has correctly removed mcafee and slowly work from there.

look, sometimes it boots, sometimes, its perpetual motion. i can boot into safe mode. and theres NO point in system restore, since ill have to reinstall A LOT OF SOFTWARE.

and this is what i have in my startup:

nerocheck - Nero Burning Rom device config
    MsgPlus - Messenger Plus
StyleXP - XP visual style prog by TGTSoft
    Another MsgPlus (????)
    ctfmon - ????
    MsnMsgr - MSN Messenger
    ZoneAlarm - Zone Alarm Firewall
Lucent Cellpipe firmware - adsl modem coniguration/connection

    and running processes are:

    msnmsgr.exe - MSN Messenger
    MsPMSPSv.exe - ????
    zonealarm.exe - ZoneAlarm Firewall
vsmon.exe - could it be the mcafee v-shield??? but its not in the registry or startup folder
    snmp.exe - ????
    tcpsvcs.exe - TCP Services, I guess
    inetinfo - IIS Service
    MDM.exe - ???
    spoolsv.exe - Print Spool Service
    MsgPLus.exe - Messenger PLus
    StyleXPService - StyleXP style applicator
    lsass.exe - ????
    winlogon.exe - ????
    csrss.exe - ????
    smss.exe - ????
    system
    system idle process

thats all. i check the system32 folder and program files\common and the mcafee installation folder for mcafee files, and found none.

and, as i said, the hangup isnt happening always, just sometimes.

PS: i have a multiboot with windows 98
