XP Hangs at desktop with no buttons/start menu

Hi. I've got a computer (custom made) with XP installed. I'm posting from an Ubuntu laptop. I've got AVG and adaware, both up to date. I have the latest XP service pack.

My problem is that when I go to turn on my computer, it will boot through the user menu and load into windows with my desktop image showing, but no icons/start menu shows up.

I can do Control/Alt/Delete to bring up the task manager. I've tried typing explorer.exe, but there is just quick flash of something at the bottom of the screen and then nothing.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be wrong with my computer?

All help/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
-Andrew

Welcome to TSG....

Can you boot into safe mode?

If you can then go into device manager and remove the video display driver and exit out and reboot the computer normally, this should make windows re-install the video driver and hopefully allow you to boot into windows all the way.
