While trying to install XP Home over Win 98 ed 2 on another machine, I received the error:
setup cannot copy d:\1386\mfc42.dll to c:\WINDOWS\setup\mfc42.dll

I need to know how important it is to have this file. Can I just tell it to proceed or do I need to make sure the file is there to be overwritten?

This is my mother-in-laws machine and I dare not mess it up

If you continue with installing XP over the top of Win98 you are very likely to mess her computer up. It is likely to have many problems.

You can perform a clean install using the upgrade version of XP . . This is a good guide to doing just that.

If you want to save your files and settings, you can use the XP Files and Settings Transfer (FAST) wizard to create an image of them and save to cd or other removable media. This is a good guide to using the FAST wizard. Just be sure you have an up-to-date antivirus before you re-instate them!
