    I have a Toshiba Satellite that's running Win. XP Media Center Edition with SP3. It's my friend's laptop and he gave it to me to fix. It had many viruses on it and when I first got it, it would turn on and instantly reboot when it got to the desktop. I got it to go to safe mode without networking support and installed a few virus/spyware removal softwares by CDR and I think I got ride of the virus, but there's some setting left over that's still messing with the system. I can now boot up normally and get on the internet, but I can't get Windows Update to work. It just goes to the normal 404-page cannot be displayed. I checked the host file, and it was fine. I checked TCP/IP settings for any DNS changes and nothing is wrong there. I also check IE network settings, and it was normal. I even tried to get to the windows update site using Firefox, and it still wouldn't let me. So, I don't think it's an IE problem, but a setting in the registry or somewhere else that won't allow it to update. Below is the hijackThis log. Please let me know if you see something in there or if there's somewhere else I can look. I have AVG installed and updated and scanned and no viruses. I also did spybot search & destroy and Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware - updated both and scanned and no infections.

    Thanks,
    Cory

    Update... After all the spyware removal softwares and anti virus programs I ran, I decided to try Microsoft Security Essentials. It ran for about 20 minutes and found one virus...

    rootkit:Alureon->c:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys

    http://www.microsoft.com/security/p...ame=Virus:Win32/Alureon.G&threatid=2147631519

    I let it remove it, rebooted and now I can access the Microsoft Windows Update website.

    So, this can now be marked as solved and I hope this info helps someone with the same problem.
