Have XP Home desktop. It got Antivirus 2008. Removed it. Then installed Norton Antivirus 2009 and ran scan, (it showed many instances of W32.Virut!gen) hit fix. Everything seemed fine. When I did my next logon the system would apply user settings, then immediately logoff. I tried many things - checked that "Userinit"=c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,

Tried the Microsoft fix of renaming security, software, sam, etc and copying over.

Tried to repair from XP install disk repair console.

Tried to reinstall over XP -- it hangs at 35 minutes after trying to do a reboot on system/volume/... and having "volume/..." reject the reboot.

(and I have tried about 20 different things to get past this, including removing nearly all hardware, renaming volume.inf to volume.bak, etc.)

No success. I have decided to bite the bullet and do a clean XP install on the desktop.

Before I could tackle that, my son pointed out that our XP media center laptop now has the same problem. The laptop is running under one user account but when anyone tries to logon under a different user account, it does the logon/logoff. I expect I will start getting the same logon/logoff problems when I do my next restart.

The laptop has Norton 360 on it. Prior to the laptop having problems I ran live update and then (as part of my efforts to diagnose the desktop) connected my desktop's HD via an external USB drive box. It showed two instances of W32.Virut!gen. I hit "Fix." I assume the infection came from the desktop HD when I connected it to scan it on the laptop. Now the laptop too has problems.

All the logon/logoff solutions I can find on the net appear to center on changing Userinit to c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe, But that's what mine says already (except WINDOWS is in Caps).

I am stumped. I saw a thread on Spybot and Hellzlittlespy and I have Spybot 1.4 but I don't think that's what's wrong because my Userinit registry value looks ok.

Here is a Hijackthis log from the laptop:

I just checked the Norton 360 log on the desktop. It found two instances of W32.Virut!gen on my desktop's HD -- one in

    i386\orun32.exe and the other in

    windows\installer\.......(lots of hex)\newshortcut1_...(lots more hex).exe
