Hello, first time on site, not tecky savvy. The other laptop I am trying to get up and running is an old Dell XP system. It will not connect to my house BT hub system. It goes to Dial-up mode., when trying to connect to internet. Error 800, says talk to provider; they say need to check wi-fi through settings; there is no wi-fi tab; so do I need some sort of link device to do this, or just shoot myself! thanks.
Must be tough, but I'm somehow managing with only 60 - 85 Mbps service. Not too many years ago was able to stream a HD movie or live baseball game with a meager 12 Mbps.
You didn't answer the second question.
That information is needed so that Dell can be correctly identified.
The Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop appears to be a 2003 model.
It appears to have Broadcom 440x 10/100 Mbps ethernet.
It appears to have Dell Wireless or Dell TrueMobile wireless.
You have THISDell Inspiron 5100 laptop which shipped in May 2003 in the U.K..
Because it's over 10 years old, its support site no longer has a list of the hardware and Windows operating system that came in it.
It undoubtedly has a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Mbps ethernet device, but it's unknown which Dell Wireless or Dell TrueMobile wireless device it has.
Go into the Device Manager, then expand the Network Adapters heading.
What's the exact names of the ethernet and wireless devices listed there?
Double-click each of those 2 devices to open its properties window.
In the General tab, does it say it's working properly?
