This is with reference to http://techguy.org/838279. I am experiencing the exact same symptoms on my Inspiron as described by Max on this thread - PF usage continues to go up to 6-7 GB on my 1GB RAM system, even after I have exited all programs, cleared browser cache, hibernated/woken-up (0 applications, minimal processes with selective MSConfig startup). This problem surfaced coinciding with two malwares:
    1. Exploit:Java/CVE-2008-5353.JD
    2. Trojan:Java/Selace.AA

Interestingly, Norton Security Suite could not detect these, but MS OneCare scanner did (but could not remove!). However, the MS Security Essentials was able to get rid of both these. But the PF problem did not go away. Even after I reformatted my C: and reinstalled XP SP3 using the Dell recovery disk, it still continues to climb up. Could this be a hardware issue?

I've never had this problem before - through 4 years of usage of this Inspiron.
    I'd appreciate all advice here!

    Thanks!
