    When I go:

Start -> Programs -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer

I notice when I click on Application and System there are a lot of files in there. What do this files do and are they needed?

    Thanks! :D

They are events that occur while windows are running. Each "file" is a log of of an event such as a program starting, an error, and so forth - they're useful for troubleshooting problems. You can clear them, but new ones are created almost continously.
