Have been able to update Microsoft Security Essentials by manually downloading the latest definition files from Microsoft's Download Catalog. It could be that I'm using service pack 3. Which I also downloaded from the same site. Trick is to not put in your search box (on this site) Windows XP updates. Just put in: "service pack updates". Then scroll through the available list that pops up till you find the right version. Mine was the 32 bit version, so I could update my oem copy of 'xp pro sp2'. Did that & the updates came pouring in through "automatic updates". Hours & hours, gigabytes of downloads. :)

Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit has not supported Microsoft Security Essentials in a long time.
You should uninstall it and then replace it with an antivirus app that's still supported.
Avast Free Antivirus is what I use.

You might consider keeping this webpage link handy - just in case you need to reinstall your OEM copy of Windows XP Pro SP2 32-bit.
