My computer recently has had some sort of weird problem:
I start up my computer as usual, and Windows XP loads, but then just before the screen showing the accounts, it freezes. What do I do?

I have already tried booting into all 3 safe modes (and they all freeze at about the same point). I have also tried to use my original Windows XP disc to try to reinstall it, but for some strange reason, the disc freezes at "searching for previous installations of Windows" so I'm unable to do that. I've tried to start up the recovery console (on that same disc) and it shows the OS I want to logon to, so I select it, but then, (guess what) it freezes. Booting into DOS doesn't help at all because it can't see the C: Drive. Funnily enough, I'm using a live-CD linux right now to post this, and it can see my C: drive fine! (and my Q: drive as well). Any suggestions as to how this happened?
I've already checked my hardware for any loose connections, etc. but it's all fine to me, so I'm all out of ideas

So what is there to do now apart from a format (which I can do with the diagnostic disc for my HD, but I really don't want to)?

Please tell me I can fix this problem :D
