trying to fix a problem on my friend's machine running windows xp. she said her machine was idling when it froze. when she restarted, her machine would boot until it would get to the winxp logo, then restart by itself. no error messages or anything; just a restart. same symptoms with safe mode.

i tried using the xp cd to recover, but it would freeze when trying to examine the hard drive.

so i decided to resize the partition using pqmagic 8 and install a new copy of xp. when doing so, pqmagic would report "error 1516." the workaround/fix involves running chkdsk, but i cannot since i cannot boot into xp or the xp cd.

can anyone suggest a fix on this?
